Flexible working hour and fun place to work in
Security Analyst (Former Employee) –  Zürich, ZHApril 1, 2019
A typical day at work, one will at least meet 3 to 5 deadlines. I learnt to be structured in executing my task so as to have an over view of my task. Management is constantly demanding more input using professional approach. Desk must always be tidy and must always logoff when I`m not on sit. Multitasking under pressure. Team work with like minded people.
Pros
Flexible working hour
Cons
short breaks

Opportunities and long hours
Architect (Former Employee) –  Zürich, ZHFebruary 17, 2019
Long days tend to support a social working environment, it seems the people you work with will become your social group after 9 months or less.

So much to learn; UBS represents one of the largest investment banks on the planet, which has played a role in many of the headline finance events over the least 20 years.

The management culture has been fairly flat, self-starters are also welcome, in so much that there's not a hand holding culture.

Most difficult is the realisation that your group and ammunition define your progress: if you're liked, and valued by the right people; your prospects are great. If you believe that hard work and meeting expectations are the route to progression: try the public sector.
Pros
High energy, loads of opportunities
Cons
Personality-driven partially nepotistic culture

Rolls-Royce driven by a racing-car driver
Investment advisor (Current Employee) –  Zürich, ZHJanuary 23, 2019
A typical day would start by calling clients to sell financial products in order to meet never-realistic financial targets of UBS, intermingled with handling email requests from clients, payment and trading orders, finishing cold coffee and planning the afternoon. In the afternoon, you would enter all contacts of the morning into the system (a lot of typing), while handling client requests, attending conference calls, requesting updates from product partners, drafting emails for clients and updating management on your progress.

You learn to run quickly. You unlearn to think deeply.

Management grows in military-grade, goal-oriented, data-driven environment. They do not believe in the power of creativity, long-term relationships, and individual tailoring. They believe in scalable, fast-track, quick-win solutions. Nothing unusual for a quoted behemoth which has to report quarterly.

Workplace culture is to ignore management and not to take it too seriously. It's a bit like French resistance during occupation.

The hardest part of the job is to keep both the clients and management happy (they want different things).

Besides interaction with clients, the most enjoyable part of the job is that if you manage to remain organised consistently every day, you can actually finish at reasonable time to enjoy the evening (but it takes 2-3 hours to unwind and become normal person).
Pros
Learning curve
Cons
Management and corporate culture

Average Standard IT Workplace
Project Mgmt. Officer - Contractor (Former Employee) –  Zürich, ZHJanuary 19, 2019
Avery average place to work, fairly good IT infrastructure but employees are rather tense, rude and aggressive; reorganisation is constant and unproductive...

its getting worse and worse from year to year
Quantitative Analyst (Current Employee) –  Zürich, ZHJanuary 6, 2019
its getting worse and worse from year to year. The working culture has deteriorated over last 10 years significantly. And of course "friends and family" are the first ones to take management positions. Almost no chance for young professionals.

Politics and tension in a long and well established institution
Team Head (Current Employee) –  Zürich, ZHJuly 23, 2018
Main source of stress is politics and work silos attitudes, mainly from management. Still it's a long and well established institution, with strong grounds, good people and platforms.
Pros
Stability, systems, size and name
Cons
Politics, Lack of Career plans, Bottleneck on promotions, too many consultants and top and mid managers

Great working environment and people to work with, but too hierarchical
Graduate Trainee (Former Employee) –  ZurichApril 29, 2017
Very supportive colleagues and good opportunities to change to new roles within the organisation.
The culture in Wealth Management is very hierarchal and makes it often hard for juniors to gain meaningful responsibilities.
Pros
Good work-life balance
Cons
Too hierarchical

Very professional work environment with talented people, with the exception of the Human Resources staff. Still seems very focused on cost cutting, which seems to weigh on moral everywhere.

Major Bank, huge extent of expertise. Lots to learn from colleagues.
At times heavy administrative sides. Terrific product range, probably second to none.
Performance management is perhaps unfair in the recording of KPIs.

Project dependent, fast-paced & intensive banking environment
Test Analyst (Current Employee) –  Zürich (Kreis 1) / City, ZHAugust 16, 2016
Working in a team supporting a Client Advisor application, normal day consisted of running a Smoke Test to prove that the system was working (for Business and other stakeholders), then either building Test Cases from complex requirements or running them, then occasionally both on the same day.

Learnt much about FX and PM trading, plus how to trace those transactions through the numerous back-end systems.

We had a good management team, supported by an excellent & intelligent group of 4 Business Analysts, who did their very best to support the project, QA, Development and give professional feedback to the Business.

My co-workers on this project were decent people.

The hardest part of the role was sometimes the sheer volume of Business Requirements that we were expected to spec and execute, occasionally we roped in the majority of the project (management, developers, BA's and QA) to help complete testing for particular releases.

The most enjoyable part of the roles was working with a decent and professional team who were at the top of their profession.

Short-sighted management, unable to learn from mistakes
Application Engineer (Former Employee) –  Basel, BSOctober 10, 2012
Over the past 20 years, UBS has become a world bank, subsequently changing its cultural focus to shareholders' benefits. Swiss traditional values have become cumbersome freight on its way to top ranking. However, the loss of national focus has made the bank susceptible to blackmail, not only to European states, but mainly towards the remaining transatlantic superpower. Instead of developing an suitable strategy to encounter the global threats it merely tries to avoid further losses by ahead running obedience, although without avail.
Pros
flexible work time
Cons
missing perspective for long-term employment, unbalanced salary
