Exciting place to work for a few years
Software engineer (Current Employee) –  Genève, GEMarch 26, 2014
CERN is an exciting workplace provided that you land a job in the Physics department. You have the feeling that you're sitting at the cutting edge of physics research and that you're helping advance it. There aren't many other jobs out there that can make you feel the same way.
My job has always been very intellectually stimulating and challenging, but very rewarding.
The programming effort has always been diverse: I had to solve complex 3d geometry problems, study algorithms modelling the interaction between particles and sensor material and even redesign the architecture of the software project.
Plus, I got to present the project at a conference and publish a paper on a journal.
At CERN meetings are very frequent (too frequent, probably) and almost always you have to do a presentation.

The downside to CERN and especially to the Physics dept. is that it's managed like academia, that is poorly.
The communication between different departments is weak.
You won't make career in Physics at CERN and the jobs are always very technical. The only management experience you'll likely get is supervising a summer intern.
However, the biggest downside is the dearth of employment opportunities. In Physics it's almost impossible to even land a "staff" position (which at CERN it means a 5 years contract).
In other departments becoming staff is easier (although getting a permanent position after the 5 years is still very very difficult).

CERN is a nice place to work for 2-3 years at most, then a safer bet is to move to a more secure job and one allowing you to develop also other
more... skills than the technical ones.  less
Pros
exciting work in the Physics department, international environment, many young people
Cons
no permanent positions, poorly managed, only technical experience

Pros
Richesse culturel, Haut niveau de savoir, moyen financier important, bonne ambiance de travaille
Cons
Difficile d'obtenir un poste permanent.

Research Engineer in Magnetic Measurement (Current Employee) –  Genève, GEOctober 29, 2013
I gained valuable experience. Specifically, it was possible use the opportunity to hone technical and practical skills and learn how to work effectively as part of a research team and how to grasp a new field of research. In additiion because of to meet tight deadlines and deal with culture communication gaps, I developed organizational, time-management and communication skills as a member of a diverse and demanding environment.

CERN: my working experience
Industrial automation engineer (Current Employee) –  Genève, GEAugust 28, 2013
I heard great things about CERN and when I got opportunity to be a part of that big organization and community I was thrilled. Working in a multicultural environment and with some of the best scientist and engineers in the world, experts in every field, can inspire any young engineer. I started my work at CERN more than two years ago and in this period I think I gained valuable experience for any future challenge. I would like to use my knowledge in field of process automation and control systems design, and in a mean time have a chance to broaden it up.

CERN gives you the opportunity to have the freedom and flexibility to work on your project when you want with plenty of amazing inspiring minds close-by from all around the world.
Every day is different and you'll share lunch and coffee with many different cultures, with an entanglement of various languages spoken around you; where everyone is working towards one goal: to find the truth, to expand our knowledge of the Universe and the develop new systems that will benefit everyone; from advanced medical devices to innovating ways of storage.
