Thermodynamics Engineer (m/f) Steam Turbines R&D (BAD002TR)

Steam turbines provide most of the power to today’s electricity grids and into the future. They are an essential component in coal, combined cycle gas powered plants, and nuclear power plants. They are also essential for the environmental technologies of biomass, concentrated solar power plants, and geothermal power plants.

Alstom is the technology leader in steam turbines. Our machines have the largest output, the most demanding steam conditions (and thus highest cycle performance) and are most efficient.

In order to maintain its technology lead, and to tailor its products to the growing markets (particularly in Asia), Alstom is committed to research and development of steam turbines. The centre of the Steam Turbine R&D team is in Baden in Switzerland, but this team is supported from other sites in Europe, and by an external team in India.

Your tasks:
  • Assume responsibility for thermodynamic and mechanical layout of steam turbines • Interact with team members from other disciplines such as mechanical integrity, heat transfer, design and aerodynamics • Optimize technical concepts, steam water cycle and steam turbine blading regarding performance, operational aspects, manufacturability and cost while adhering to customer, engineering and quality specifications • Support, coordinate and contribute to various steam turbine R&D projects • Provide thermodynamic documentation for tendering and order execution • Continuously develop your own expertise as well as methods, processes, know-how and know-why in the department in the area of thermodynamics • Contribute to the Alstom Power scientific discipline community “thermodynamics” in order to reach and maintain a world-class level • Provide feedbacks and undertake actions for improvements and further development in the department

Your profile

  • Formal education in mechanical engineering with strong skills in turbomachinery and a focus on thermodynamics, turbine design and operation of steam turbines • Ability to communicate fluently and effectively in English; German is advantageous • Highly motivated team player with the motivation to develop and apply your engineering expertise • Ability to work independently as well as within an international team
